He was our 'baby Melvin', a Virginia apple orchard orphan cat. Back in the early 90's a few of my wife's family worked part time in an apple orchard. One day a tractor accidentally ran over a female cat with a small litter of kittens. My brother-in-law took the black kitten home and the person driving the tractor took the other kitten. He gave the kitten to us on a family visit very shortly after he brought him home.
We tend to name our cats with people names or characters from TV or a movie. Over the years we've had; Buckwheat (from SNL), Opert & Ronald Anne (from the comic strip Bloom County), Al, Bigboy, Karl, Buster, Scooter, Piper, Roscoe, Lulu and Melvin. Because Melvin had a tough start to his life, he was always very aggressive towards his food. Even this last weekend, as he was not feeling well, Melvin was still at the table, begging for scraps of food. He regularly ate breakfast with us :-) This aggressiveness cause us to name him after a line in the movie Bill and Ted's Bogus Adventure when they "melvined" the Death character (a wedgie, actually). Well, the 3 of us thought that was funny and so we named the kitten Melvin.
The photo above isn't very good, but is a recent one and it shows his long black fur. He was a good cat and lived 17 years. We will miss him a lot the next breakfast we sit down to eat.
We love you baby Melvin, may you rest in peace (and have some fun with Buckwheat, Scooter, Karl & Bigboy where ever you may be).
